On May 12, an earthquake happened in Wenshui, Sichuan province. The Sichuan earthquake registered 7.8 on the Richter scale, making it a major earthquake. Roads to Wenchuan Conuty, epicenter of the quake, were blocked by fallen rocks and debris.
More than 22,000 perished during the quake. And many people were still unaccounted. Officials warned that the death toll could rise as high as 50,000. Many families are disunited, and children made orphans.
Right now, rescuers in China struggle to reach the quake survivors.
Soldiers rescued a child from the rubble after an earthquake in Beichuan, Sichuan province.
A three-year-old girl was rescued today after spending more than 40 hours under the rubble of a collapsed building in what China’s state media hailed as a “magical” earthquake survival tale.
However, she apparently survived because she had been protected by the bodies of her parents who died in Monday’s disaster, the official Xinhua news agency reported.
Life is precious ….We thank God for a peaceful and happy life on our side, but we should also help where we can.
They need your help to provide help to thousands of survivors who have lost their homes and loved ones. Please donate to MercyCorps.
Mercy Corps has been assisting families and vulnerable communities in China since 2001. Mercy Corps, through its local partner China Foundation for Poverty Alleviation (CFPA), is mounting an emergency response for survivors. Together, they are procuring critical supplies such as food, water, clothing and shelter supplies to rush to affected families. They have deployed two experienced staff members from our Beijing office and one staff member from Seattle to help coordinate efforts.
